April’s photo is of a mosaic of colourful flora on the slopes of Mynydd Carningli, near Newport, Pembrokeshire together with a photo of a Welsh pony. This 349m-high mountain with far-reaching views is the site of an Iron Age hillfort, one of the oldest in west Wales. The area is important for many rare species of plants. A small herd of hardy Welsh wild ponies grazes the heathland which helps prevent the spread of scrub and bracken and restore the condition of the heath. There are several native UK species of wild pony roaming freely across many wild parts of Britain, known for their hardiness, endurance and a reliable, calm temperament.
