One intriguing image is of a quokka, a marsupial native to Australia. This small wallaby, about the size of a cat with a short tail, coarse fur and rounded ears has a ‘smiling’ expression due to its facial structure – indeed, the one shown in the photo looks to be smiling at the camera! Found in parts of Western Australia including Rottnest and Bald Island, quokkas live in loose groups in dense vegetation, wetlands, and coastal scrub and are mostly nocturnal, browsing various leaves and grasses. The baby or joey develops in the mother’s pouch and is carried around for about six months.
